When Should I Start Planning My Renovation? A Realistic Timeline from Idea to Completion

If you’re thinking about renovating your home, one of the most common questions we hear is: “How long is this going to take?” The answer depends on the size and scope of your project. One thing is always true: the earlier you start planning, the better your outcome will be.
‍

Thoughtful planning, clear timelines, and accounting for key factors like permits and material lead times are what set great projects apart. As a local General Contractor with 15 years of experience, let us walk you through what you can expect – from start to finish.
‍

A trusted team, a thoughtful process, and a commitment to quality on every Eagleview Construction project.

Initial Discovery Conversation

1–2 weeks from initial contact
‍

Every project starts with a discovery conversation. This is where we get to know you, your space, and what you are hoping to achieve. We talk through your goals, priorities, budget and discuss our process here at Eagleview.
‍

At this stage, we:

  • Walk through your goals, your must-haves, and nice-to-haves
  • Think through your budget and timeline
  • Discuss our process and next steps
    ‍

Because budget plays a key role from the start, we recommend reviewing our guide on typical renovation costs as you begin exploring your project.
‍

If you’re considering renovating your space, we would love to have a conversation. Having a general sense of your goals and budget can help us make the most of that first conversation.
‍

Design & Build Phase

If you move into the Design Phase with Eagleview, this is where your project really starts to come together. In Phases 1 and 2, we take the time to fully understand your home as it exists today and dive deeper into your goals alongside our interior designer. We’ll explore concepts, guide you through material and finish selections, and keep everything aligned with your budget. There are a lot of decisions in this phase, but it’s also where the project really starts to feel real.
‍

Phase 1: As-Builts

  • Detailed measurements of your home, property, and site
  • Initial design consultations to better understand your goals and budget
  • Review and discuss any existing home constraints

Phase 2: Project Concepts

  • Review mood boards to align on overall vision and style
  • Develop a floor plan concept that reflects your goals and our expertise
  • Validate the design direction against your budget
    ‍

Here’s what you can typically expect for Design Phase timelines:
‍

  • Bathroom: ~4 weeks
  • Kitchen: ~6 weeks
  • Addition: ~6–12 weeks

‍

Example Mood Board 1:

Example Mood Board 2:

Exploring materials, textures, and finishes that reflect your style and stand the test of time.

Phase 3: Estimating

Once we land on a layout that feels right, we build a detailed scope of work from the design and then put together your project estimate. This usually takes about 2–3 weeks, depending on the scope.
‍

Estimating means we are evaluating the most cost-effective and efficient way to build your project. This includes but is not limited to – sending bid packages to any subtrade partners we work with, leveling quotes for door, window, millwork, exterior packages, etc.
‍

Phase 4: Build Mobilization

A solid planning phase is what sets a great project apart. It reduces delays, keeps things running smoothly, and makes the entire experience feel a lot more seamless from start to finish.
‍

Before we break ground with Eagleview, we take the time to get everything dialed in. This is where we lock in the details and set your project up for success, keeping timelines tight and your budget on track.
‍

Here’s what to expect when you sign your Build Contract:
‍

Behind the Scenes: Internal Hand-off and Project Management Engagement: The pre-construction and build project team meet to ensure all details are shared and planned for (1–2 weeks from contract signature).
‍

  • Project Management and Site Supervision: Our Project Management team locks in the team and builds your schedule (1–2 weeks after contract signature).
  • Architectural Design: Permits are secured, typically 4–6 weeks.
  • Site Supervision: Reviews all project details and highlights any questions or gaps in our understanding.
    ‍

What you can expect to get into at this stage:
‍

  • Interior Design Selections Kick Off: This is where we lay out all the decisions that need to be made and in what order to keep the project running smoothly. Our goal is to alleviate stress and as much of the lift for the homeowners as possible. We specialize in sourcing, procurement, and bringing your vision to life.
  • Trade Day: We will ask to come on-site with the whole project team to review the site conditions once more before we officially “mobilize” (2–6 weeks before your project starts).
    ‍

This is when your project really starts to feel real. Your schedule comes together, and you’re picking out your finishes. We use specialized tools to keep it all organized and transparent, so you can follow along with updates, timelines, and key milestones every step of the way.

Step 5 – Building Begins

With permits secured (if required), a bin and site lavatory are delivered, and the site is prepared with proper protection and clearly defined traffic paths. From there, work begins!
‍

Generally, all projects follow the same phases:
‍

  • Site Protection
  • Demolition
  • Foundations
  • Framing
  • Rough-ins
  • Drywall
  • Back framing
  • Paint
  • Finishes
    ‍

And intricacies along the way!
‍

Project Timelines

Timelines can vary depending on how involved your project is, but from a construction standpoint, here’s a realistic idea of what to expect once things get underway:
‍

  • Bathrooms: 6–8 weeks
  • Basements: 8–16 weeks
  • Kitchens: 12–16 weeks
  • Main Floor Reconfiguration: 12–20 weeks
  • Additions: 6–12 months
    ‍

Finally, as we near the end and the project wraps up, the focus shifts to the final details that make the space feel complete. This stage includes:
‍

  • Final inspections and approvals
  • Finishing details and touch-ups
  • Walk-through of the completed space
  • Final cleaning and site preparation
    ‍

Project Completion and Warranty Period Begins
‍

We take the time to walk through everything with you, answer questions, and make sure the finished space feels ready for you to enjoy. It is also our chance to take care of any final adjustments and make sure every detail has been looked after.
‍

By this stage, the big pieces are done, but these last steps still matter. They are what help bring the whole project together and make the transition feel smooth.

Our goal is simple: We want you to feel confident, cared for, and excited to step into your finished space.
‍

Finally, Eagleview offers a 2-year workmanship warranty on all of our work. We take pride in what we do, and we want you to take pride in working with us.
‍

Quality workmanship delivered with care, backed by our 2-year workmanship warranty.
